Most swimmers are comfortable around 28°C. Slide to set your target.

We use your postcode to estimate the typical local climate.
4
Select every month you'd like to swim in comfort. Colder months need a bigger heater.
5
Quick on-demand heat-ups (e.g. firing it up for the weekend) need a larger, more powerful unit than gently keeping the pool warm all season.
6
Indoor pools lose far less heat. Outdoor pools lose much less with a cover.

Your recommended heating options

Both will heat your pool to target — choose based on how you'll use it. Each is filtered to the recommended size in our store.

HEAT PUMP
kW heat output
Most energy-efficient to run — pulls free heat from the air for roughly a fifth of gas running costs. Ideal for maintaining temperature across a long season. Heats more gradually from cold.

GAS HEATER
MJ/hr input
Heats fast and on demand, whatever the air temperature. Perfect for quick or occasional heating and extending the season at short notice. Higher running cost, lower upfront price.

How this calculator works +

We work out two things from your inputs:

  • Temperature rise needed — the gap between your target temperature and the typical air temperature in the coldest month you've chosen to heat (estimated from your postcode's climate region).
  • Heat demand — your pool's size, that temperature rise, and how much heat it loses (indoor pools lose the least; an outdoor cover roughly halves heat loss).

Heat pump size (kW) scales with your pool volume and how hard the unit must work — a bigger temperature rise (colder climate), no pool cover, and especially choosing quick on-demand heat-ups all push the recommended size up, in line with standard industry sizing. Gas heater size (MJ/hr) is based on heating the pool quickly, allowing for typical 85% gas efficiency. Both are matched to the nearest standard Australian unit size.

Please note: This calculator provides an estimate based on common pool setup assumptions, including typical regional climate data, an assumed average pool depth, standard daily run times, and a standard allowance for heat loss with and without a pool cover. Individual pools and locations vary, and factors such as wind exposure, shade, humidity, exact local temperatures and how often the pool is used can affect the actual heater size required. For the most accurate recommendation, please confirm with your pool specialist or heater manufacturer before purchasing.
